‘The bill was brought to calm students’ anger’

After being passed in the Lok Sabha, the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, aimed at reforming examinations, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha today (Thursday). During the discussion on the bill, the Leader of the Opposition in the House, Mallikarjun Kharge, criticized the government and alleged that the bill had been brought to calm the anger of students. Kharge also appealed that the government should listen to the opposition. Additionally, he demanded a statement from PM Modi in the House.

Shri Kharge said, “Because of paper leaks, many innocent people had to suffer. This new bill will not achieve anything because only some data in the old law has been changed. Provisions such as hefty fines, strict punishment, a special task force, and fast-track courts have been included, but nothing will change because of them.”

He also said that the ‘Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill’ had been brought to pacify the young people who had taken to the streets, not to solve the problem of paper leaks. There is nothing new in it. If protests were already underway, why didn’t the government engage in dialogue? (updated on 30th July 2026)
