Private institutions should not view education as a product- Suvendu Adhikari

West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has strongly emphasized maintaining quality in higher education. The Chief Minister said that while private institutions may earn profits on their investments, they should not regard education merely as a product for making money.
Responding to a question about attracting foreign universities to the state during an interaction with members of civil society, the Chief Minister said that his government is ready to consider any strong proposal from a reputed foreign university.
He said, “We can think of an ‘Education City’ where there are multiple higher education institutions. It can include both government and private universities. We can also invite foreign universities. If renowned foreign universities come forward with a good proposal, we are ready to consider it.”
He added, “Private educational institutions have made substantial investments, and naturally they expect to earn profits. But education should not be seen merely as a product for making money.”(UPDATED ON 5TH JULY 2026)
