15 Killed In Fire At Lucknow Coaching Centre, PM Modi announces compensation

At least 15 students were killed after a massive fire broke out at a building housing a coaching centre in the Aliganj area of northwest Lucknow on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said. Several people were trapped after the fire erupted, forcing some students to jump from the first floor.Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was anguished by the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who have died and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

In the Lucknow case, a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The SIT will include Amrit Abhijat, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Religious Endowments and Culture Department. The second member of the SIT is Praveen Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, Lucknow Zone.

Authorities are now investigating how a structure approved as a residential building came to house commercial shops and educational facilities.Four people have been arrested and four officials have been suspended over the incident.

The fire raged for over an hour and at least 15 bodies were recovered after it was brought under control.According to reports Investigators said the building did not have an emergency exit. The route leading to the roof was also reportedly blocked, preventing people from escaping as smoke and flames spread through the structure.

The building, located in a commercial area, has a pet accessories shop and other stores apart from the coaching centre. Witnesses said several people jumped from the centre, which is on the first floor.

Police and fire teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Deputy Chief Minister Pathak also visited the scene to monitor the rescue efforts.(UPDATED ON 22ND JUNE 2026)
