Finnish Foreign Minister Defends India For Buying Russian Oil,

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen defended India for buying Russian oil, explaining that India followed the rules of the Western price cap.

Speaking at a meeting in Finland alongside Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, she explained that the price cap was created to keep global oil flowing while limiting Russia’s profits, meaning India did exactly what was intended.

Mr Jaishankar strongly rejected European criticism by pointing out that Western sanctions forced Europe to buy up Middle Eastern supplies, leaving India to find other affordable options.

He also criticised the United States for changing its rules, noting that Washington originally asked India to buy Russian oil to stabilise global markets before later putting tariffs on Indian imports (UPDATED ON 13TH JUNE 2026)
