l Database, Information System Developed Is Crucial Foundation For Crop Improvement

Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Dr. M. L. Jat today said that the soil database and information system developed by the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning is a crucial foundation for crop improvement, agricultural development, and the creation of decision-support systems.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 50th Foundation Day of the Bureau in Nagpur, he said that the Bureau is progressing in the right direction in line with the changing needs and priorities of the nation.
The Bureau has recently developed India’s first soil texture map using remote sensing and satellite data. It provides hectare level insights to help farmers select optimal crops. It is now working on high-resolution water retention maps, particularly for Maharashtra and southern states.
The landmark occasion celebrated five decades of the Bureau’s significant contributions to soil resource mapping, soil information generation and land use planning in the country.(UPDATED ON 23RD AUGUST 2026
