Various Safety Measures Reduce Rail Accidents

Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that safety is accorded the highest priority on Indian Railways.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, Mr Vaishnaw said, as a consequence of various safety measures taken over the years, there has been a steep decline in the number of accidents on Indian Railways.

He said, the number of consequential train accidents has reduced from 135 in 2014-15 to just two accidents in this financial year so far. The Minister said, the expenditure on safety-related activities has increased from around 39 thousand crore rupees in 2013-14 to over one lakh 20 thousand crore rupees in 2026-27.

He said, electrical or electronic interlocking systems with centralised operation of points and signals have been provided at six thousand 671 stations to reduce accidents due to human failure. Mr Vaishnaw said, interlocking of Level Crossing Gates has been provided at 10 thousand 395 Level Crossing Gates to enhance safety there.(UPDATED ON 24TH JULY 2026)
