for the longest continuous tenure as Prime Minister

On June 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become the first Prime Minister of India to have served continuously in the office for the longest period after being elected. He will set a new record for the longest tenure as an elected Prime Minister. June 9 also marks the completion of two years of his third term. At the NDA Chief Ministers’ meeting scheduled for June 10, a resolution will be passed congratulating PM Modi on this historic achievement. The resolution will be moved by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu. Leaders of other alliance partners will support the proposal. The resolution will also mention the achievements of the past twelve years of his tenure as Prime Minister.

India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, took the oath as an elected Prime Minister for the first time on May 13, 1952. He remained an elected Prime Minister continuously for 4,397 days, that is, 12 years and 14 days. On June 9, PM Modi will surpass that record by completing 4,398 days, or 12 years and 15 days, as a continuously elected Prime Minister. Nehru had become Prime Minister on August 15, 1947, but until the first Lok Sabha elections were held, he headed the interim government and was not an elected Prime Minister. Nehru remained Prime Minister until his death on May 27, 1964. If Nehru’s entire tenure is counted, it totals 6,130 days. This includes the 1,733 days during which he served as head of the interim or non-elected government.

Several historic achievements have already been recorded in Narendra Modi’s name. He has become the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister in India’s history. He has already surpassed former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure of 2,272 days. He is also the only non-Congress Prime Minister to have won three consecutive elections. He already holds the record for the longest continuous tenure as the head of elected governments.

He took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001. Since then, he has continuously served as the head of a government. He served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 7, 2001, to May 22, 2014, and as Prime Minister from May 26, 2014, to the present. In this way, Modi has completed more than 9,000 days as the head of elected governments.(updated on 2nd june 2026)
