AAP MP Raghav Chadha with 2/3 strength now in BJP

Raghav Chadha has announced his entry into the BJP,.Seven of the AAP’s 10 MPs, or two-thirds of its strength, in the Upper House would merge with the BJP, Chadha said at a press conference this afternoon, accusing the party that once came to power in Delhi over promises to fight corruption, of moving away from honest politics.

AAP MP Raghav Chadha joined the BJP on Friday. The Rajya Sabha member from Punjab said that alongside him, over two-thirds of the members of the party in the upper house are also merging with the Bhartiya Janta Party.

Addressing a press conference with Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal, AAP MP Raghav Chadha says, “We have decided that we, the two-thirds members belonging to the AAP in Rajya Sabha, exercise the provisions of the Constitution of India and merge ourselves with the BJP.”

This comes after months of tensions between the AAP leadership and Raghav Chadha.
“As per the Constitution, two-thirds of the total MPs of a party can merge with another party,” Chadha said. “We have submitted a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan in this regard today… submitting all the documents required.”

Had Chadha resigned alone, he would have immediately lost his Rajya Sabha membership under the anti-defection law. According to the Constitution, a Rajya Sabha member is protected from disqualification only if at least two-thirds of the party’s legislators agree to a merger with another party.
