Modi claims BJP will win a landslide victory in the West Bengal

All voting records were broken in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, with such high voter turnout for the first time since independence.

The West Bengal and Tamil Nadu assembly elections this year saw record-breaking voter turnout. The sheer number of votes cast in both states shattered all previous records, sparking political parties’ claims of victory.Tamil Nadu recorded a voter turnout of 85.13 percent, an increase of nearly 12 percent from the previous election. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, the first phase of polling for 152 seats saw a 92.57 percent voter turnout, an increase of nearly 10 percent from the previous election. This is the first time in the country’s history that a voter turnout of over 90 percent has been recorded in an assembly election.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a bold claim regarding the ongoing elections in West Bengal. He said that based on the voting data so far, he is confident that the Bharatiya Janata Party will win a landslide victory in the state.

Addressing an election rally in Krishnanagar and later in Mathurapur in the state’s Nadia district, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the people of West Bengal for the high voter turnout in the first phase. He said the turnout signaled a “resounding mandate for change.” West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of approximately 92 percent in the first phase.

Praising the role of the Election Commission, PM Modi said, “The Election Commission deserves to be congratulated for preventing any major incidents of violence during the elections. This is the first time in the last 50 years of electoral history in Bengal that incidents of violence have been minimal.”

From the information I have received so far about the voting, I am confident that this will be a resounding mandate for change by the voters of Bengal.’ Citing election data from other states in the country, the Prime Minister claimed that whenever people have voted in large numbers, the BJP has won decisively.

During a rally in Hooghly, Amit Shah claimed victory for the BJP, while in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that the public has expressed their anger against the BJP by going to the polling booths and the victory of Trinamool is certain after the first phase itself.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also attributed the over 90 percent voter turnout to his party’s favor. He claimed that the BJP could win 125 of the 152 seats in the first phase..(updated on 23rd April 2026)
