Kharge raised the issue of the purification in Haldwani

Amid the Monsoon Session of Parliament, there was a heated exchange between the opposition and the ruling party in the Rajya Sabha. As soon as proceedings of the Rajya Sabha began, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of the purification carried out in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, after his speech. BJP’s J.P. Nadda responded to Kharge’s allegations of purification.
Kharge said, ‘I was in Haldwani, where I addressed a public meeting at Ramlila Maidan. People were present there. At that time, I did not mention the name of any community or religion. I only reiterated issues related to the government. But after my speech, BJP people performed a havan there to ‘purify’ that stage. Does this happen in a democracy? How are you protecting the Constitution? I am the Leader of the Opposition.’
Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, responding to Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, said, ‘What Kharge ji said is truly sad. It is sad not only for the Congress party but for all of us. The BJP does not support such activities. It never does. But we will investigate this. I assure you that whatever happened there will definitely be investigated. But I want to make it clear that the BJP does not support such activities. I condemn it. The national president will look into this matter. It is a matter of great regret for all of us that your feelings have been hurt.'(UPDATED ON 13TH AUGUST 2026)
