Parliament Adjourns For The Day Following Opposition Protest

Both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned for the day following the opposition protest over various issues, including the NEET paper leak case. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha each faced three adjournments due to the opposition uproar.

When the Lok Sabha assembled for the day at 11:00 AM, Speaker Om Birla tried to take up the Question Hour, but the opposition members raised the issue of the paper leak of the NEET examination. Mr Birla urged the opposition to cooperate in running the House, but the opposition members continued with their protest, which led to adjournment of the Lok Sabha till 12 noon. When the House reconvened after the first adjournment at 12 noon, the opposition members continued with their protest. Amid opposition uproar, the House took up motions for election to different committees of the Parliament. Presiding Officer Sandhya Ray urged the Members to return to their seats and allow the House to function smoothly. She said, Zero Hour belongs to the Members and the entire country is watching the proceedings of the House. Despite her appeal, the opposition members came to the well with placards and carried on sloganeering over NEET and student protests. It led to adjournment of the Lok Sabha till 2 PM.

When the House reassembled at 2:00 PM, Presiding Officer Dilip Saikia repeatedly appealed to the protesting members to cooperate in ensuring the smooth functioning of the House. He said that under Rule 377, several members of the Parliament want to raise matters of public importance. Mr Saikia also objected to bringing banners and posters into the House, saying it undermines the dignity of the Parliament.

The Presiding Officer noted that for the past two days, some opposition members have been coming into the Well of the House and disrupting proceedings, which, is not appropriate. As the pandemonium continued, the Chair adjourned the Lok Sabha till tomorrow at 11:00 AM.

    The same scene was also witnessed in the Rajya Sabha. When the Upper House met after the second adjournment at 2:00 PM, Deputy Chairman Harivansh tried to take up the scheduled business, but the opposition members raised slogans and continued with their protest. The Deputy Chairman said that rules and procedures have been established for conducting discussions in the House and urged members to adhere to these rules.

Harivansh appealed to all members to allow the smooth functioning of the House, but of no use. Amid the ruckus, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till tomorrow at 11 AM.(UPDATED ON 21ST JULY 2026)
