Bihar – Toll tax will now also be imposed on state highways

In Bihar, toll tax will now be collected from vehicles using roads and bridges. At the Bihar Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, July 1, under the chairmanship of the state’s Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, 29 proposals were approved, including a proposal to levy toll tax on state highways in Bihar, similar to national highways. This decision has come as a major setback for vehicle owners. Toll tax will now be collected from all vehicles, ranging from cars, jeeps, and tempos to buses and trucks.
The toll rate for light motor vehicles has been fixed at ₹1.25 per kilometer.///For heavy vehicles such as trucks, the charge will be ₹6.65 per kilometer, and for vehicles with higher carrying capacity, it will be ₹8.10 per kilometer.///To make toll collection modern and transparent, priority will be given to digital payments through FASTag and other approved electronic systems.//There is also a provision for an annual review of vehicle toll charges.///The toll tax rates may be revised as required.///Under the new system, vehicles without FASTag will be charged a higher toll than the standard rate.///Additional penal charges will also be imposed on overloaded vehicles. Local and frequent travelers will be provided exemptions, concessional passes, and multiple-trip facilities according to prescribed categories.///The date from which the new toll rates will come into effect has not yet been decided.///A decision will be taken after a report on vehicle load on the roads is prepared.(UPDATED ON 1ST JULY 2026)
