Bangladesh said Teesta water-sharing agreement can now move forward

The impact of the BJP’s victory in West Bengal is now being felt across borders. Bangladesh politics is seeing this as a major opportunity. According to media reports, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in particular, has openly welcomed the result and expressed hope that the long-stalled Teesta water-sharing agreement between India and Bangladesh can now move forward.
The BNP directly targeted Mamata Banerjee, saying that her government’s objections have held up the Teesta agreement. Dhaka believes that state-level political disagreements have prevented this crucial bilateral agreement from moving forward. Now, with the change in power, the situation is expected to change.
BNP leaders have hailed the BJP’s victory under Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership. Party Information Secretary Azizul Bari Helal said that with the new leadership, relations between India and Bangladesh could improve further. He expressed hope that coordination between the state and central government would now make progress on this issue.(UPDATED ON 6TH MAY 2026)
