New government will be sworn in in Assam on May 12th!

The results of the Assam Assembly elections were announced on May 4th, with the NDA alliance achieving a landslide victory. Following this, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. Now, news has emerged that a new government in Assam may be sworn in on May 12th. This means that Himanta Biswa Sarma could once again take the oath of office as Chief Minister on May 12th.
Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned along with his cabinet colleagues today, paving the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government. The BJP-led NDA won 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. The Assam Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 9, and the counting of votes took place on May 4.
“Following the formal notification of the results of the Assam Elections 2026 and to facilitate the formation of the new government, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today submitted his resignation as Chief Minister to Hon’ble Governor Laxman Acharya at Lok Bhavan along with his cabinet colleagues,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on ‘X’.
The post said the governor has accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue as caretaker chief minister until the new government takes charge.(UPDATED ON 6TH MAY 2026)
